1. Start with a Skincare Routine:

Beautiful boudoir photos start with healthy and glowing skin. Begin preparing for your photoshoot weeks in advance by establishing a skincare routine. This routine should include cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting your skin from the sun. Consider consulting a dermatologist for personalized advice and treatments to address specific concerns.

2. Hydration and Nutrition:

Incorporate a balanced diet and stay hydrated to ensure your skin looks its best. Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats can help improve your skin's texture and radiance. Drinking plenty of water will keep you hydrated from the inside out, contributing to a youthful glow.

3. Hair and Nails:

Book appointments for a fresh haircut, color touch-up, or nail care as needed. Choose a hairstyle and nail color that make you feel confident and complement your boudoir style. Well-maintained hair and nails can enhance your overall look in the photos.

4. Wardrobe Selection:

Selecting the right wardrobe for your boudoir photoshoot is crucial. It's all about choosing outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Options can include lingerie sets, bodysuits, corsets, or even your partner's shirt. Consider a variety of styles and colors to showcase your personality and sensuality.

5. Professional Makeup:

While you can do your makeup yourself, hiring a professional makeup artist can elevate your look and reduce stress on the day of the shoot. Discuss your vision with the artist, and ensure they understand the style you're aiming for, whether it's natural, classic, or dramatic.

6. Hair Styling:

Similarly, consider hiring a professional hairstylist to create the look you desire. Whether you prefer sleek and elegant or loose waves, a hairstylist can help you achieve the perfect hairstyle to complement your wardrobe choices.

7. Tanning and Body Care:

If you plan to tan, do so gradually and choose a natural-looking shade that complements your skin tone. Avoid excessive tanning or artificial tans that may appear too orange in photos. Exfoliate your body to ensure a smooth canvas for your photos, and moisturize to keep your skin soft and supple.

8. Practice Posing:

Before the photoshoot, spend some time practicing poses in front of a mirror. Experiment with different angles and expressions to discover what works best for you. This will help you feel more confident and relaxed during the actual shoot.

9. Sleep and Rest:

A good night's sleep is essential for looking and feeling your best. Aim for adequate rest in the days leading up to the photoshoot to prevent under-eye bags and fatigue.

10. Relaxation and Confidence:

On the day of the photoshoot, take some time to relax and boost your confidence. Listen to your favorite music, practice deep breathing, or engage in meditation or visualization exercises. Confidence is your most beautiful accessory, and it will shine through in your photos.

11. Communicate with Your Photographer:

Lastly, communicate openly with your photographer about your vision, preferences, and comfort level. A professional boudoir photographer will create a safe and comfortable environment for your photoshoot, ensuring your experience is empowering and enjoyable.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Beauty and Confidence

Preparing for a boudoir photoshoot is about embracing your beauty, sensuality, and confidence. By following these beauty and self-care tips, you'll set the stage for a successful and empowering experience. Remember that boudoir photography is all about celebrating your unique self, and your photos will reflect the beauty that comes from within. So, get ready to step in front of the camera, embrace your sensuality, and create stunning boudoir images that capture your essence and beauty for years to come.

Explore the transformative power of boudoir photography in our latest blog post, where we delve into how these empowering sessions boost confidence for individuals of all sizes. Discover the magic of body positivity, inclusivity, and self-love as we celebrate plus-size beauty, challenge societal norms, and redefine traditional beauty standards. Join us on a journey of empowerment and discover the unique strength and sensuality captured through the lens, fostering a deep sense of confidence that transcends conventional ideals. Embrace the beauty in every curve and unlock the potential for self-discovery and acceptance in this empowering exploration of boudoir sessions

In a world that often bombards us with unrealistic beauty standards, embracing one's own body and celebrating its unique beauty is a revolutionary act. Boudoir photography has emerged as a powerful tool for individuals of all shapes and sizes to reclaim their confidence and showcase their innate beauty. Today, we explore the transformative journey of boudoir sessions, specifically highlighting how they can boost confidence for individuals often marginalized by societal norms, such as plus-size or "fat" women.

Body Positivity and Inclusivity:

The first step towards building confidence is embracing the philosophy of body positivity and inclusivity. Every body is unique, and beauty is not confined to a specific size or shape. Boudoir photography, with its emphasis on celebrating the individual, provides a safe space for women of all sizes to express their sensuality and feel empowered in their bodies.

Creating a Safe and Judgment-Free Zone:

A skilled boudoir photographer understands the importance of creating a safe and judgment-free environment during sessions. This is particularly crucial for individuals who may have experienced body shaming or discrimination based on their size. Professional photographers work diligently to ensure that every client feels comfortable, respected, and valued throughout the entire process.

Empowering the Individual:

Boudoir sessions empower individuals by allowing them to take control of their narrative and redefine their self-image. For "fat" or plus-size women, this is an opportunity to showcase their confidence, strength, and sensuality in a way that challenges societal stereotypes. The resulting images serve as a visual testament to their beauty, strength, and resilience.

Celebrating Curves and Softness:

Boudoir photography has the unique ability to highlight the softness, curves, and uniqueness of each body. Rather than adhering to conventional standards, these sessions focus on showcasing the inherent beauty of diverse body types. By celebrating the beauty in every curve, boudoir photography challenges harmful stereotypes and promotes a more inclusive and accepting definition of beauty.

Fostering Self-Love and Acceptance:

Engaging in a boudoir session can be a transformative experience, fostering self-love and acceptance. As individuals see themselves through the lens of empowerment, they begin to appreciate the beauty in their bodies and develop a positive relationship with themselves. This newfound confidence often extends beyond the photography session, influencing various aspects of their lives.

Conclusion:

In a society that often dictates unrealistic beauty ideals, boudoir photography stands out as a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment. For "fat" or plus-size women, these sessions provide a unique opportunity to challenge societal norms, redefine beauty standards, and cultivate a deep sense of confidence and self-love. It is time to celebrate the beauty of every body and recognize that confidence knows no size.

So, boudoir photography, right? It's all about capturing those intimate and personal moments, celebrating the essence of who we are. But when it comes to the choices Mormon women make about stepping in front of that lens, it gets interesting.

Let's break it down. Boudoir sessions are like a visual poem of confidence, an ode to personal expression. From marking significant life events to just owning your space and feeling empowered – these are the reasons folks decide to bare it all, so to speak.

Mormon women enjoy personal boudoir in pj

Boudoir can be a modest personal event. Even something cute like pajamas.

Now, where it gets intriguing is when we throw Mormon beliefs into the mix. Mormonism, like any other faith, brings with it a set of moral guidelines. The big question: do Mormon women take part in boudoir photography, and how does their faith influence that choice?

Here's the scoop – it's all about individual perspectives. Some see it as a celebration of their bodies within the boundaries of their faith, while others might feel it's a bit too far from their personal values. See, interpretations of religious teachings can be as diverse as a David Bowie playlist.

Respecting autonomy is key, my friends. Whether you're talking about Mormons or not, everyone's got their own journey. What's empowering for one might not be the same for another. And that's cool – it's about finding your groove, respecting boundaries, and embracing individuality.

Now, if you're curious about what Mormon women really think about boudoir photography, it's time to open up those conversations. Everyone's got a story, and within the Mormon community, those stories are as varied as the characters in my movies.

To sum it up, the world of boudoir photography meets the choices of Mormon women in a complex dance. By acknowledging the diversity within the Mormon community, we see that personal decisions on boudoir photography are influenced by faith, values, and personal empowerment. So, let's keep those conversations going and navigate this nuanced terrain together. Cheers to embracing who you are, lens and all!

Bridal Boudoir session: brookelyn

Brookelyn is a fabulous hair and makeup artist. She came to me for a bridal boudoir. The setting was beautiful and her images are amazing.

Brookelyn is a fabulous makeup artist. She came to the studio prepared with cute white lingerie and her veil and sparkly wedding shoes. I love these images in color and in black and white. Bridal boudoir can be a fun gift for your soon to be spouse, or it can simply empower you as a woman to see and realize your beauty, inside and out.

Bride with veil on bed boudoir babydoll

I have worked with Brookelyn a few times on different projects and she is a consummate professional makeup artist. She comes prepared, she knows what she is doing, I love both her makeup work and her hair styling. I give brides an option of color or black and white. Take a look at these in black and white.

Or consider these in color…

Why does bridal boudoir matter?

A boudoir shoot is a great way to celebrate yourself, create amazing photographs that reflect just how vivacious and incredible you truly are. It's so easy to get caught up with work and life. "Sometimes the fire glows a little dimmer than it once did, and when that happens, having some great images of yourself to look back on can help reignite that flame within yourself," says photographer Bailey Harada Stone.

Why Empowering Women Via Boudoir Photography Matters

Explore how a boudoir session can build confidence and self image. In this beautiful moody black and white session with Demi shows how one middle aged woman expressed her confidence, and found a new appreciation of herself.

Some people become doctors, teachers, or politicians, some throw themselves into the world of finance or sales, and some run full steam into the sciences. These practical jobs have their place on this Earth and I’m grateful to every single person who chooses any of the aforementioned career paths (and all the ones I didn’t name). I’ll be the first to admit that boudoir photography isn’t exactly “practical,” and that it might even be misunderstood by some. But there’s one thing I know from personal experience doing this work: it changes lives.

It’s no secret that women, specifically, face a brutal and judgmental world. One filled with marketing images of airbrushed “perfection,” and marketing ploys to become “better” through diet, supplements, gym memberships, and more. Baring all in front of the camera — literally — may seem like a way to highlight every self-perceived flaw that women are taught to believe about themselves, but I’m here to tell you that a boudoir session has the complete opposite effect for my clients.

Boudoir sessions empower women. They give them space to unleash their curves, to forget about all the marketing noise, to celebrate their bodies in a way they’ve never done before. I may not have a “practical” job that saves literal lives or educates our children, but just like I value those careers I think — no, I know — there’s value in what I do as a boudoir photographer, too. The proof? Every women who steps in front of my camera and walks away feeling more sure of herself and more beautiful than ever before.

Dawn: Modest Bridal Boudoir

Some brides who would like to give their groom a boudoir gift are still a bit modest. Like every client, as I discussed style and personal preferences with Dawn, we determined that for her photographs, she wanted cute, sweet, and modest images that she wouldn’t be embarrassed if someone ran across them.

Some brides who would like to give their groom a boudoir gift are still a bit modest. Like every client, as I  discussed style and personal preferences with Dawn, we determined that for her photographs, she wanted cute, sweet, and modest images that she wouldn’t be embarrassed if someone ran across them.

Dawn found some items of her own and I dug into my bins of wardrobe and together we came up with a wardrobe that suited her. We also added a cute white dress to the mix. To me this represents a great collaboration and understanding of client needs and wants. Boudoir really is more an attitude than a look. I think we managed to capture a really sweet vibe that matchers her personality.

Do you remember your wedding night? Full of expectations, yet feeling shy to reveal yourself fully to the person you love.  I remember that shy hesitation.

I don’t think a woman needs lingerie to be sexy and I think these images show just that.

I invite you to explore the fun possibilities of doing your own bridal boudoir. Do it as a gift to yourself, to your future self, and of course your groom will love them…..and maybe someday when you are gone, your daughters will find them and relish the fact that “dang! Mom was beautiful”.

Nikki

Nikki has a boudoir photo shoot in Millcreek Utah. With a pink satin baby doll bustier and a cute Victoria’s Secret bra and panty set.

Nikki is my definition of a “blond bombshell”. Tall, voluptuous, not a skinny stick, but nice and curvy.

Tall woman in lingerie laying on couch

I photographed Nikki in my studio on Highland Drive in Millcreek Utah. Nikki is a tall lady and we had some fun posing her and getting these pictures. I like to keep things simple so that the focus is on the unique beauty and style of a woman’s personality. Nikki brought this sexy matching bra and panty set and the subtle lace design was a nice contrast to her nearly flawless skin.

Nikki brought the cute Victoria’s Secret bra and panty set above as well as this cute bustier or baby doll lingerie in pink. Nikki is so tall and statuesque that I just had to have her do some standing poses to show off her figure and long legs,

Nikki brought her boyfriend to the session. He mostly stayed in the background, but I did get a few of them together with him being silly, just for them to remember. Nikki brought this sexy and very cute pink bustier or baby doll teddy and very cute pink glitter high heels to match.

Sometimes a woman starts a session feeling a little timid, wanting to do a boudoir session, but just not feeling confidant. Usually it only takes a few minutes and as a woman starts to get used to the process and can see a few images on the back of my camera that she gains confidence and a new appreciation of her body. Sometimes a client will decide to be a bit more mold in expressing them selves and exploring their own beauty. This happened with Nikki and this one image is the only one I’ll share.

I hope you will consider doing your own session and expressing your own beauty and personal style. Set up a free no pressure consultation and find out if we are a good fit for you.

More Reasons Women Hire Male Boudoir Photographers

Although the genre of boudoir photography is dominated by female photographers, there is a small minority of us who are male — and like anything, there are advantages to shooting with both.

In this article, we’re going to explore the advantages of shooting with a professional male boudoir photographer, something you may or may not have considered, and being a male boudoir photographer myself, I think I have a unique insight on this topic.

By the way, just to keep things simple, I’m writing this from a heterosexual perspective because taking into account all the combinations that can arise from all the various sexual orientations is beyond the scope of this article.

1. Knowing What Sexy Is

If you’re getting a boudoir shoot as a present for your man, then a male photographer will instinctively know what is sexy for another man and capture images that your significant other will love.

A female photographer won’t have the same sensibilities.

The opposite is true as well.

A female photographer is going to instinctively know what is sexy for another woman when photographing a man.

Men and women are attracted to different aspects of the opposite sex and we’re unable to recognize those subtle nuances of the same sex when photographing them. They just don’t show up on our radar the way they do for members of the opposite sex.

The tricky part is that they don’t even have to be blatantly sexual in nature to be considered sexy.

For example, I may be photographing a woman and notice that her hair flowing over her shoulders looks beautiful and a female photographer might agree, but being male, I might want to pull her hair to one side to expose her bare shoulder and neck which would be a subtle sexual nuance the female photographer might not even think of.

Marilyn Monroe or James Dean?

Did you know that men find women who smile to be sexy but for women it’s just the opposite? They’re attracted more to men who brood.

A study published in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion, conducted an experiment where they showed pictures of the opposite sex to both men and women. The participants were asked to rate the people on their sexual attractiveness based on their expressions.

“Men who smile were considered fairly unattractive by women,” said Jessica Tracy, a psychology professor who directed the study.”

But with men, just the opposite was true. It was the women in the pictures who were smiling that were considered to be the most attractive.

As a male, I instinctually know this because it rings true with me. Women who smile are just more attractive, in some cases even more so than a blatantly sexual pose that a female photographer might think is sexier. So when I’m shooting boudoir I’m always trying to get my clients to smile more.

This is something a female photographer may not be aware of unless she researched it and then made it a point to incorporate it into her sessions.

Being male, I just feel it.

2. It’s Easier To Flirt

When shooting boudoir, capturing a wide variety of images from playful to seductive is key, and a woman’s expression plays a big part in all that.

It’s much easier for a woman to actually experience this than to fake it. Working with a photographer of the opposite sex can make this easier because they’re dealing with the real thing and they don’t have to pretend.

It’s a bit like acting.

Utah woman posing for boudoir photo

It’s easier for an actor to be flirtatious in a scene with a member of the opposite sex than with a member of the same sex, if the scene calls for it (if they’re heterosexual).

The same holds true during a boudoir session.

It’s easier for a woman to “play off of” a member of the opposite sex than with one from the same sex since their natural orientation is towards the opposite sex to begin with (unless, of course, they’re attracted to women).

Working with a male boudoir photographer will create that scenario automatically rather than working off a female photographer.

3. Understanding All of Sexy

This is a topic I haven’t seen anyone write about before with regard to male photographers shooting boudoir verses female photographers, and that is understanding all the different levels of “sexy”.

Sexy comes in many different variations with various levels of intensity from nuanced to out right blatant. A male photographer is going to be able to recognize all these subtle variations in a woman just as a female photographer would be able to recognize them in a man.

It’s because of this recognition that just comes naturally to us as males and females when observing the opposite sex, that a wider range of images can be captured covering that entire spectrum.

By utilizing this broad spectrum, male photographers are more likely to capture more unconventionally sexy images and avoid the more stereotypical ones that a female photographer might think would appeal to a man.

Bonus!

You Dig His Style

Another reason you may want to shoot your boudoir session with a male photographer is that you just like his style.

It may be that you resonate with that photographer’s work so much that you’re left with no other choice than to shoot with him.

Final Thoughts

There’s a lot to consider when deciding who you want to shoot your boudoir session with. I hope this article has given you some insight into what some of those advantages are if you choose to go with a male boudoir photographer

Thanks for your time!

And remember…

The Biggest Mistakes People Make Before Their Boudoir Session

…you have every single reason to feel a little bit nervous or unsure about what to expect. I promise you, though, that I’m going to make sure that you don’t just look amazing in your boudoir images, but that you feel amazing before, during, and after the session.

To help ensure things go smoothly at your upcoming boudoir session, I thought it’d be helpful to share some of the biggest mistakes that clients make so that you can avoid them:

Trust me — I totally understand that baring all (quite literally) in front of a stranger is not exactly the easiest thing to do. You’re putting yourself out there, and you have every single reason to feel a little bit nervous or unsure about what to expect. I promise you, though, that I’m going to make sure that you don’t just look amazing in your boudoir images, but that you feel amazing before, during, and after the session.

To help ensure things go smoothly at your upcoming boudoir session, I thought it’d be helpful to share some of the biggest mistakes that clients make so that you can avoid them:

woman prepared for her boudoir photo session

Getting Drunk: A little bubbly is a nice touch, but it can sometimes be easy to go too far when you’re caught up in nerves. Remind yourself what your alcohol limits are — something only you know! — and stick to them.

Not Eating the Day Of: I’ve seen this happen a few times. It’s an honest mistake, but it’s also one that sets you up for a lackluster shoot. You need sustenance to keep your mental and physical energies up, so don’t starve yourself the day of (or in the days leading up to) the shoot. Eat colorful, whole foods in moderation.

Obsessing Over Others’ Boudoir Images: It’s OK to find a little inspiration on the web, but don’t let yourself fall down a dark hole of self-comparison. I think it’s best to come into a shoot without a ton of others’ images swimming around in your head. You’ll feel better, trust me!

Engaging Negative / Apologetic Self-Talk: This happens almost without fail during every session, and it’s always a bit of a bummer to hear a client talk badly about themselves. It could be something as simple as “I’m sorry I didn’t get something that fits perfectly!” or “Can you make me look skinnier?” or “I hate my thighs!” I know that we live in a world that makes us focus on our self-perceived flaws, but I challenge you to only think and utter affirmative words before, during, and after your session.

Bailee

Bailee posted on her wall this thought: “The intimacy of being by yourself is an intimacy that many cannot grasp. How your energy isn’t affected by anyone else’s. The silence. Being exactly who you are. The you when no one is looking. I realize how much I actually love myself and how I’m one of my own best friends”

These are from the second time Bailee came to my studio. ( I love repeat clients!) This boudoir session was done in studio with no “bedroom”. It is simple, yet elegant and sexy.

Bailee says…

Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.
— Bailee

I was super impressed with how friendly and relaxed Bailee was. We were able to knock out a bunch of different looks in such a short time. Some women worry about buying the “right” lingerie for a boudoir session. But we were able to get some great looks with a simple sweater. I really believe that sexy is an attitude, a state of mind….an expression, more than it is about clothing.

Something simple like a cute matching bra and panty work great. This set we just used some very basic poses and Bailee looked fabulous. Below she wore a cute baby doll lingerie set and a basic, but elegant white bodysuit. There were so many gems from her session. Bailee, proving that moms still got it.

I believe that a boudoir session is an important way to give yourself self love.

Boudoir FAQ Answered:

Is being stressed normal? How can I calm myself down?

Absolutely! Almost everyone is nervous when they decide to do this type of shoot. It is totally expected. My goal is to provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere during your session. Let's turn on your playlist and jam out to your favorite music!

What type of lingerie should I buy for my session?

It is honestly a very personal choice. Start by choosing your favorite color! You want to make sure whatever you buy fits you comfortably, not too tight and not too baggy. If you have areas that you most certainly want to cover, such as your stomach, try high-waists, corsets, or a gown! If you're going to simply break the ice, bring a button down. This is one way to warm up in front of the camera. Want a boost in your chest? Find a supportive bra and panties to match. The options are endless. Have fun shopping!

Does my age or size matter?

Beauty comes in all ages and sizes. We welcome thick, thin, young, and old. We encourage you to have this opportunity to experience self-love.

Why Choose a Male Boudoir Photographer?

Boudoir is an amazing experience. I believe in it to its core. While it is most common to have a woman photographer, I want to share a few reasons you should consider hiring a male boudoir photographer for your experience. Why I have a hetero-male eye…I strive for an elegant beauty and sexiness in my images. I want the women I photograph to love looking at their photographs.

In this article, we’re going to explore the advantages of shooting with a professional male boudoir photographer, something you may or may not have considered, and being a male boudoir photographer myself, I think I have a unique insight on this topic.

1. Men and women typically see women differently. Through a different set of experiences, a different mentality, and a different intent/goals. What men find sexy and what women find sexy are typically different things. A woman might say, "That old tank top? That isn't sexy." But a man might say "I love that tank top on you, when you are casual and walking around the house is when you are sexiest.” A business suit can be sexy with the right expression and attitude.

2. I've been told that since my clients are getting these portraits as a gift for their husband, they want a man's opinion and perspective.
Me: “Which pictures do you want in your gift album?”
Her: “You pick them out since you are a guy, you will know what he likes more than I will!”
In the same vein if I needed to get a gift for my girlfriend I would probably ask a woman for advice too.

3. A common consensus is that it can be easier for a woman to show her sexy side in front of the camera with a male photographer because its a dynamic they are somewhat familiar with.

4. Playboy, FHM, Maxim, and Sports Illustrated Swim Suit are mostly shot by male photographers. Boudoir as an industry is dominated by women photographers because of the perception that the client and her spouse will feel more comfortable if they are shot by a woman. Know that both male and female photographers are focusing on posing, lighting, emotion and experience. We are really not looking at 'you' but at creating the best images. I promise you will have a comfortable, fun and professional experience.

curvy girl in bra and panties

5. Find the photographer who makes you feel accepted, sexy, and with a style you can't resist. They will leave you on cloud 9 reminding you that you are beautiful, powerful, sexy and special. The photographer should be the best at their craft and make you feel relaxed and comfortable above all.

Although the genre of boudoir photography is dominated by female photographers, there is a small minority of us who are male — and like anything, there are advantages to shooting with both.

By the way, just to keep things simple, I’m writing this from a heterosexual perspective because taking into account all the combinations that can arise from all the various sexual orientations is beyond the scope of this article.
